Yep, we know this is a hard one! With an abundance of parties, alcohol flowing freely and food being offered every way you turn how could you possibly survive Christmas sugar free?
At The Sugar Breakup we are always here to help so we’ve put together a couple of ideas that will hopefully make the next month a little easier.
Let’s start with alcohol
Beer, red wine, spirits and dry white wines are the alcohols with the least amount of fructose (beer doesn’t have any). The drier the white wine the less amount of sugar it will have, remember if it tastes sweet it means sugar so limit champagne and stay away from desert wines. Unfortunately almost all manufacturers add sugar into apple cider so try to avoid or find the driest cider possible.
Mixer Alert!! Spirits are usually in with mixers and these are what contain all the sugar. Juice and tonic water have as much sugar as soft drinks so either drink your spirits neat or mixed with soda water. Try cutting up some lemons or limes, squeezing the juice then adding the wedges, fresh mint, ice and soda water with a clear spirit such as vodka. An easy, refreshing drink you can make at home, take to a party or order at almost any bar.
And don’t forget the basic rules – don’t drink on an empty stomach; if you do need a snack stick to the roast nuts rather than the chips; match every glass of alcohol with a glass of water; and pace yourself! Nothing worse than being that guy or girl at the work Christmas party (you know what we’re talking about).
Party Food: Snacks, canapés and finger food – what to do?
For a start, don’t turn up hungry. Have a meal or snack beforehand so when you arrive you aren’t grabbing everything that comes your way.
Avoid canapés that are covered in sauces or look “sticky”. Eg: Sticky chicken wings, the “sticky” comes from sugar or honey.
If you do fancy the chips, go for salted not the flavoured like chilli or barbeque chicken as the flavourings contain sugar.
Don’t be afraid to ask what’s in the food. These days there is such an increased awareness of food intolerances/allergies that asking what’s in food is not rare or considered rude.

Blowout?
So everything didn’t quite go to plan..? That’s ok, that’s life, don’t give yourself a hard time. If you’ve eaten sugar after being sugar free you’re probably feeling a little under the weather. It’s a good reminder that sugar can do damage to your body and good motivation to dust off and get back on the sugar free wagon.
